Ēostre, or Ostara, is a pre-Christian Germanic goddess of the spring equinox. She was celebrated for the end of winter and the coming of spring, typically around the end of March, but eventually the Ostara festival was combined with the resurrection of Christ celebration during the conversion of heathens in Europe. This is what we know of today as "Easter". Ostara was mainly celebrated in Germany and Denmark, but was a celebrated goddess for European heathens in general. Some Ostara traditions we still continue today for easter also come from the Ostara celebrated in ancient times. These include: decorating eggs, veneration of hares, and the belief of curative properties of water that is drawn early on Easter morning.
